After we got settled in for a bit, I packed my travel bag and headed up to Puerto Galera for some scuba diving.
There are two ways to go to Puerto Galera from San Jose. One way, is to take a bus up to Sablayan and then continue on to Abra De Ilog where you take the ferry to Puerto Galera. It takes six and a half hours to get to Abra. There is only one ferry that goes to Puerto Galera and it leaves at 12 noon. The ferry is 200 pesos and the terminal fee is 10 pesos.
The other way is to go east and take a bus up to Calapan and then a jeepny or van to Puerto Galera. The bus ride is also six and a half hours to Calapan and then another hour to Puerto Galera.
On my first trip up to Puerto Galera, I left san Jose at 6:30 am and didn’t arrive in Abra until 1 pm. The last ferry had already left at noon so I had to take a special boat for 1500 pesos.
There’s not much to do in Abra as it’s just a small port town. If you are leaving from San Jose and going to Puerta Galera, you need to take the 2:45 am bus. This bus will arrive in Abra around 10 am, giving you enough time to buy your ferry ticket and relax.
Staying in San Jose is like being a thousand miles away from Puerto Galera. Even though there is an airport here with Cebu Pacific flights from Manila, it’s not easy to travel to Puerto Galera.
But for me, half the fun is gust getting there.
